Mainstream radio has never really hit the spot for me, BBC 6 music was definitely much closer to what I wanted to listen to but is still quite formulaic by nature. Since I started listening to NTS, I realised that internet only radio stations were much more accessible than just someone listening through their laptop on a weird place on the internet. With apps built by the stations and the shows also appearing on Mixcloud, it meant that I could listen on the move, in my car, through my Sonos system etc and I love it. Whilst DoYouRadio is still my mainstay, I’ve branched out into Soho Radio, Love Will Save the Day, Voices Radio and the Boat Pod Jim has just recommended 1BTN to me so I’ll be giving that a listen soon.
The Boat Pod’s home is on a narrowboat on the canal in Little Venice, London. There’s a nice synergy here as I loved London Shell Co who ran a restaurant on a narrowboat nearby and I worked with them in wine for a good few years. Sadly, that’s now closed but definitely go and visit their static restaurant in Swains Lane, it’s one of Giles Coren’s favourites and mine (though I think his recommendation means significantly more than mine).
The Boat Pod looks like it’s ever expanding with it’s list of shows and offerings, doubling as a recording studio and even offering ‘How to DJ’ courses. Recent highlights from me have been Colleen Cosmo Murphy doing a show with her daughter, Wheelup who I also saw at Worldwide and The Ecstasy Show which has rapidly become one I’ve listened to a few times and have also checked them out further. Hell, the Boatpod have even had Paul Weller do a Bluenote special, they must be doing something right.
There’s just something so personal about internet radio, if you haven’t ventured into this world, I highly recommend it.
Out to the Captain, keep up the good work
Much Love
